Geoffrey Oryema

When I had my shop, one of my favorite recordings to play was by Geoffrey Oryema called Beat The Border. Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel work with him on this and his debut, Exile. I heard some music tonight that reminded me of his work. I need to go rip the CDs to the iPod.

"The disk alternates between frenetic thumb piano riffs and slower, melancholic sounds. "Exile" is a gripping musical expression precisely because it was made in exile, with shifting moods, from despair to yearning. Orema sings in turn in Acoli (his tribe's language), Swahili and English."

Pick it up.
